Chlorella Supplements May Be Good For Heart Health

The next time you’re in the mood for algae (which is often, right?), try Chlorella—your heart may thank you. A recent study has found that Chlorella supplements improve certain markers of cardiovascular health. Published in the Nutrition Journal, the study involved giving a 5 gram daily dose of Chlorella, or a placebo, to subjects with mildly elevated cholesterol. The Chlorella group experienced significant reductions in total cholesterol (-1.9%), “bad” LDL cholesterol (-11%), and triglycerides (-10.3%). Participants in this group also saw significant increases in blood levels of particular antioxidants called carotenoids, which Chlorella contains. The study is the first to document the cholesterol-lowering benefits of Chlorella in these specific ways.
