Get Your Party On: Party Food Ideas for People with Diabetes

For many, summer is a time replete with reasons to celebrate. Picnics, potlucks, barbecues—all of these are excellent reasons to whip up a batch of your favorite fare to share. However, if you have diabetes, the foods you choose to bring and eat require a little extra planning. In that spirit, here are a few vittles that are good options for people with diabetes (in moderation, of course!):

  • Improvised fruit soda. If you’d like to abstain from alcohol, try diluting your favorite 100% fruit juice with effervescent mineral water or seltzer for a refreshing soda.
  • Kombucha. This bubbly brew is made by fermenting sweetened black or green tea. Look for kombucha that's low in sugar, as different brands vary in their sugar content.
  • Hummus. A delicious, filling, and versatile food that’s typically found in the Mediterranean diet. Hummus contains a bunch of good things: fiber from chickpeas, fats from sesame butter, and antioxidants from olive oil; and it can be flavored with garlic, lemon, and other seasonings. Traditionally eaten as a dip, hummus is ideal with whole grain pita chips or sliced raw veggies.
  • Leftover roasted chicken or turkey. These can be smart alternatives to processed lunch meats, which are often high in sodium nitrate and other preservatives. Whole wheat crackers spread with hummus and topped with bite-sized portions of one of these meats make great appetizers.
