New data from a study with rats has found that açaí seed extracts may have benefits for heart health. Published in the journal, BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine, the study tested the exercise performance of rats subjected to myocardial infarction (MI), otherwise known as a heart attack. Rats with MI who received açaí seed extracts ran a total distance of 970 meters. This result was significantly better than the rats with MI who did not receive açaí (178 meters), and was comparable to healthy rats without MI (1339 meters). Researchers found that the açaí seed extracts also reversed many of the other negative health conditions associated with MI, such as systolic blood pressure. This new study adds to a growing body of research on açaí, a tropical berry from the Amazon known for its potent antioxidant properties.
