Researchers in Iran have found that supplementing with calcium and vitamin D improves symptoms of gestational diabetes, a metabolic disorder during pregnancy that can lead to a variety of complications. In the study, levels of glucose, insulin, and LDL (“bad”) cholesterol were reduced in women with the disease who received calcium and vitamin D. Insulin sensitivity and HDL (“good”) cholesterol also improved. The study is the first to look at how calcium and vitamin D affect gestational diabetes in these ways.
