Along with cold weather comes a rise in infections, especially in people with diabetes. Add to that heightened stress around the holidays and less sleep, and you've got yourself a cold or flu in the making. Stay warm and help your body stave of sickness with these easy tips:
- Get your vitamin D. Low blood levels of vitamin D are correlated with increased upper respiratory tract infections. Ask your doctor about how much vitamin D is right for you.
- Drink a cup of tea. Stay warm and hydrated this winter with a cup of oolong tea. More research is needed, but at least one study so far has found an association between consumption of oolong tea and a decrease in blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes.
- Add a multivitamin. Depending on your diet, you may not be getting all the nutrients you need. It’s also important to keep in mind that people with diabetes may have specific nutrient needs, so consult with your healthcare provider to help you select a comprehensive multivitamin.
