A coalition of five trade associations representing the dietary supplement industry has issued a joint statement that supplements cannot cure or prevent Ebola virus. The statement follows warning letters that the FDA sent to three supplement manufacturers; these manufacturers suggested their products could treat Ebola virus. In the joint statement, the trade associations endorse the following recommendations:

• “Marketers and retailers of dietary supplements are urged to refuse to stock or sell any supplements that are presented as treating or curing Ebola virus disease, or preventing Ebola virus infection.”
• “Marketers and retailers should refrain from promoting any dietary supplement as a cure or treatment for Ebola virus disease.”
• “Anyone who believes they may have Ebola virus disease or may have come in contact with the Ebola virus should contact a healthcare professional immediately. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has more information on Ebola virus disease and the proper actions to take if you suspect you are ill.”

While supplements can play a role in supporting general immune health, the joint statement makes it clear that Ebola virus is not a condition with which supplements can help. The trade associations that issued the statement are: American Herbal Products Association, Consumer Healthcare Products Association, Council for Responsible Nutrition, Natural Products Association, and United Natural Products Alliance.
