Naproxen-Diphenhydramine

Pronounced

"na-PROX-en/DYE-fen-HYE-dra-meen"

Common brand names:

Aleve Nighttime

Uses

This product is a combination of 2 drugs: naproxen and diphenhydramine. It is used by adults who have trouble sleeping (insomnia) due to minor aches and pain.

Naproxen belongs to a group of drugs known as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). It is used to relieve minor aches and pain from various conditions such as headache, muscle aches, dental pain, menstrual cramps, or arthritis. It works by blocking your body's production of certain natural substances that cause inflammation. This effect helps to decrease swelling, pain, or fever. Diphenhydramine is an antihistamine used in this combination product to help you relax and fall asleep.

If you are also treating a chronic condition such as arthritis, ask your doctor about non-drug treatments and/or using other medications to treat your pain. See also Warning section.

How to Use This Medication

Read all directions on the product package before taking this medication. If you have any questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Take this medication by mouth as directed by your doctor or the package label, usually 2 tablets at bedtime with a full glass (8 ounces/240 milliliters) of water. Do not increase your dose or take this drug more often or for longer than directed. Do not lie down for at least 10 minutes after taking this drug to prevent irritation inside your throat (esophagus). If this medication upsets your stomach, you may take it with food, milk, or an antacid.

Do not take this medication unless you have time for a full night's sleep of at least 7 to 8 hours. If you have to wake up before that, you may have trouble safely doing anything that needs alertness, such as driving or operating machinery. (See also Precautions section.)

If your condition lasts longer than 2 weeks, or if you think you may have a serious medical problem, get medical help right away.
