Grenache is the dominant varietal in France’s southern Cotes du Rhone region, but is almost always blended with the darker colored and more tannic Syrah to balance its soft and straightforward fruitiness. These Grenache-dominated blends tend to be hearty and broad on the palate with a warm, wild herb spiciness and roasted red fruit flavors.
Grenache is the most planted varietal in Spain where it is used to soften the more austere Tempranillo grape and is increasingly bottled on its own. Old vine examples can offer a heady richness, full of ripe cherry and black pepper, often done in a more modern fruit-driven style.
New World Grenache tends to be lighter in body with simple, straightforward red berry fruit flavors and mild floral herb aromatics.
