Essential Oils (Aromatherapy

2018: Clarks Lecture Series: Essential Oils (Aromatherapy)

What are essential oils?

  • Essential oils are the smell we get when we crush a plant (such as rose petal) and receive a fragrant smell: Essential oils are the ‘Essence’ or smell that we get but that is just the start of EO’S.
    • These Essential oils are part of the plant make up- and provide the plant protection from environmental attack (the plants immune system).
    • Essential oils have the healing and body balancing properties of that particular plant. Essential oils are highly concentrated.
      • ie, . Chamomile: has been used for years as a calmative and digestive tonic.
        • E0 Chamomile: 1 drop of oil is equivalent to 30 cups of tea.
    • All plants don’t have essential oils or smells
    • There are 400 or so Essential Oils distilled today
      • 100+ of these are used in Aromatherapy

How do Essential Oils Work? (Aromatherapy)

  • Essential oils work directly via smell on the Limbic System:
    • Action areas: (Brain and nervous system) this makes them popular because of the immediate effects often received by the user.
    • Essential oils’ actions go deep into the body when used affecting the regulatory areas of the body-limbic and organ system(s)
  • Essential oils work directly on the body (topical)
    • Essential oils USED topically are found in the blood stream in minutes
    • Essential oils used topically effect the body’s organ system(s) and regulatory systems. ( ie: inflammation)
    • Uses for Aromatherapy: Uses range from inner beauty, immune balancing, tissue repair- muscle -ligament etc, relaxation, digestion, nerve balancing.

Using Essential Oils?

  • Topical Applications:
    • Massage oils and lotions
      • Make your own or added to existing product ( see dilution suggestions)
  • Used directly on the skin
    • Use of ESSENTIAL oils directly on skin should be a NEAT oil- one that is safely used by itself without skin irritation (see attached oil use Veriditas Guide)
  • Diluted: Used in a carrier oil(s)
    • Essential oils are extremely concentrated and often need to be used in small quantities or used in dilution to prevent skin irritation- See Dilutions below
